JUDGES, WARRIORS, AND HOUSEWIVES...OH MY!

I find the story of Deborah fascinating. In a time of great oppression, a woman was the judge of Israel. She held court and made political decisions. She then had the gumption to lead her people into a battle with their oppressor.

Deborah, a wife and a mother, lead her people into a battle with their oppressor.

What??? That’s crazy! Even in the 21st Century, most of our political and military leaders are men. Who was this woman? Why was she special? I’ll tell you who she was. She was Deborah, wife of Lappidoth, a mother in Israel. That is all. She did not try to act like a man to fill a “man’s” role. She simply understood the unique authority and power that God had given her as a woman, and she stepped into her destiny.

Barak refused to go into battle unless Deborah went with him.

She had two counterparts. One was a man named Barak and the other was a housewife named Jael. Barak refused to go into battle unless Deborah went with him. This was not because he was afraid, but because he understood who she was and he respected it. He was perfectly fine with letting the honor go to a woman. Her other counterpart, Jael, fearlessly stepped up when the opportunity came, and dealt a fatal blow to the enemy.

I have a great longing to see women today step into their positions as Deborahs.

I have a great longing to see women today step into their positions as Deborahs. We as women do not need to compete with men, but rather value what God has created us to be. We are different than men. We bring something unique to the table that only we carry. Let’s lead fiercely, like only a Mother Warrior can. Let’s celebrate each other and empower each other. You were created to be bold and strong. Rise up Deborah, the women with discernment and wisdom. Rise up Jael, the women with fierce power. Rise up Barak, the men who say, “I want to go into battle with her!”
